Week 18

18It’s hard to know what to make of this week – it’s been something of a rollercoaster. As you may recall me saying previously, I’m looking to get away from some of the traditional sources of income (mainly mystery shopping) in favour of more long-term sustainable strategies to really grow my income.

From this came some interesting leads and ideas that I will be working on over the coming weeks. However, it is difficult to find the right balance between planning for the future and maintaining current income. I certainly don’t think there is an exact formula to it, and if there is I certainly haven’t found it. As a result of this, I was struggling a little this week in terms of income. Despite having some good things happen in terms of potential future income, by Friday I was only on around £70, which is well under what I would want to be making in a week.

I have to be honest, this was becoming a little discouraging – at £70 a week I might as well go out and get just about any job (I would like to point out this project is about more than just money, but earnings is a pretty integral part of it). From being in this position on Friday, in another twist of the rollercoaster, I eventually ended up hitting my record weekly profit.

The rollercoaster doesn’t quite stop there though, there is one final loop to navigate. While I was delighted to hit this record target, and the kind of money I really want to be making every single week, it was from probably the least sustainable, least long-term source possible.

An unbelievable run of luck on the tables - nice but certainly not a permanent strategy

An unbelievable run of luck on the tables – nice but certainly not a permanent strategy

If you haven’t already scrolled down to investigate what this mystery source of income was, I best let you know. You may remember a few weeks ago, in week 12, I was unbelievably lucky with a casino site’s free bonus offer. Well incredibly, lightning does strike twice! Once again those suckers at 888.com towers (who I signed up with a couple of months ago to take advantage of a cashback offer) sent me an email informing me they’d put a £20 completely free bonus fund into my account. I decided to do a similar thing to what I did with the £5 offer a few weeks back, and spread the money £1 on 20 different numbers. The odds were more in my favour this time, with a 20/37 chance of winning. The rest, as they say, is history – To reach the withdrawal threshold I had to bet the £20 around 300 times over, and by the time I had done that I couldn’t believe my luck to be withdrawing £314. It’s as if these guys just want to give me their money – that’s over £500 I’ve fleeced them for now.

However, my excitement at this is tempered by the fact I recognise it was almost entirely luck (there is the argument of being in it to win it, making your luck etc. but really this goes down to sheer good fortune). As such, while it is fantastic to have this money, and it will enable me to use this money to create even greater potential to earn, at the end of the day it is an anomaly – a blip on the landscape – rather than a real fork in the journey.

In Summary:

After a few fairly poor weeks, it’s certainly nice to have overachieved. However, I’m still concerned that I haven’t hit upon many ongoing, regular and sustainable income sources. At the same time though, I could look at this differently and say that even without these, I am still somehow making a half decent amount through sheer perseverance – which has to be worth something. It makes me wonder just how well things could go when I do finally find that illusive initiative.

Revenues in Week 18:

Less expenses of £32.35:

Week 18 Total: £417.39

Running Total: £3357.41

The Week Ahead:

A change of fortunes has been refreshing, even if it doesn’t necessarily reflect a meaningful long-term change. If nothing else it is boost to the spirits that perhaps I just needed. I hope to be able to grow on this success and get myself £300 in week 19.

Congratulations on a marvellous windfall. Are you considering property development ?

  2. Be careful of the casinos – they seem to let you win firts time and then you start losing so never bet what you can’t afford to lose.

    • Completely agree. I make sure to only bet money that is a free offer or cashback promotion. The golden rule for me is that if I lose the wager, I still have to come out in profit or break even. Otherwise it’s a dangerous game, as you say.
