Start with the delivered price

Add the item price to the delivery charge that applies to your address and chosen service. A free-delivery threshold may require extra spending. If a $35 item has $5 delivery, adding an unwanted $15 item to reach a threshold does not reduce the cash outlay: it changes a $40 order into a $50 order, assuming delivery then becomes free.

For bulky goods, check what delivery actually includes. Bringing an item to a building entrance, carrying it into a room and installing it are different services. Use the arrangement you need in the comparison. Do not assume an advertised delivery price covers every step.

Check the consequences of a return

Read the terms applicable to the seller, product and location. Establish whether return transport is supplied, whether charges apply and how the item must be packaged. Consumer rights vary by jurisdiction and circumstances; a general shopping example does not determine them.

Keep original packaging where it is needed for a possible return and practical to retain. For a large item, consider whether you could actually arrange the transport required. An apparently simple return promise may still involve time and logistics that matter to the decision.

Compare the realistic alternatives

Consider a hypothetical $80 item with $12 delivery versus the same suitable item available locally for $88. The delivered online total is $92. The local option may still involve travel costs, so include those if they are additional to a journey you would otherwise make. Avoid counting a whole planned trip as a new purchase cost when only a small detour is relevant.

If the chance of a return is uncertain, describe that uncertainty rather than inventing a precise probability. A fit-sensitive purchase may justify checking dimensions more carefully or choosing an option with a clearer return process. This is a decision about the actual purchase, not a claim that one shopping channel is always better.

Keep the final evidence together

Save the order, delivery arrangement and relevant return terms. Check the confirmation before the item is dispatched where possible. If the charged service differs from what you selected, raise the issue promptly through the seller's process.

Record the complete amount in the purchase budget. Separating delivery into an overlooked category can make an item appear cheaper than it was. The useful figure is the cost of obtaining and keeping a suitable product.
